Here’s everything you need to know about living in one of the world’s most exciting cities.

First of all, let me say — you’ve already made a great decision by choosing London. It’s a hub for food, fashion and fun nights you’ll never forget. So take a deep breath, relax and prepare to be amazed by all the city has to offer.

Let’s discuss touristy spots. What’s worth it and what should you skip?

You really do need to see Big Ben, just to say you’ve done it, but the area was slightly underwhelming to me and I wouldn’t allot too much time there. There is a great view across the Thames of the London Eye which makes for a great touristy photo announcing, “I’m in London!”

Speaking of views, Sky Garden is free(ish) and offers 360 views of the city. The caveat is that you will want to go with friends and split a bottle of wine while you take in the panoramic views. So while the ticket you book online is free, the full experience isn’t.

Notting Hill is an absolute must-see. Portobello Road Market is full of character, pastel houses provide the perfect backdrop and there are adorable bookshops and cafes galore. Farm Girl Cafe was a — slightly expensive — highlight of my trip.

Hyde Park is great if you love the outdoors, but depending on the time of year, London’s grey skies can put a damper on your trip. Also, be warned — all of London is full of birds that fear no human, but Hyde Park is teeming with them.

Skip Sketch if you value your wallet. While my heart longs to go there, £59 for afternoon tea is more than I’m willing to spend. Ask me again when I’m about to leave London, maybe my thoughts will have changed.

Camden Market is, in my opinion, far superior to the others when it comes to food options. That may just be because I was craving macaroni and cheese — the “and” being significant because macaroni cheese here is simply not the same as the homemade deliciousness I knew back in the States.

Either way, The Mac Factory is worth checking out.

I’ve found that it’s more fun to discover bars and pubs on your own along the way, but the quintessential English entertainment at Mr Fogg’s Tavern in Covent Garden is a great experience.

Buckingham Palace’s Changing of the Guard is a little overrated, but it’s a surprisingly great place to watch the sunset.

The Tower of London is a better, less crowded place to watch the guards do their thing.

Covent Garden is full of trendy shops — albeit on the expensive side. If you can find a good bargain, it’s a great place to spend a day. I personally recommend smelling all the candles at Diptyque and then not buying any (unless you’re living like that).

Finally, and most importantly, make sure you download Citymapper, or you might get lost on the Tube — the maps lining the walls are a lifesaver when your phone dies but have nothing on the app’s efficiency.

Good luck, safe travels and make the most of your time — it will be over before you know it!
